Fendi and Design Miami present 'Fashion Vertigo'
22nd April 2010
Back in 2008 renowned Italian Fashion label teamed up with Design
Miami, the precocious off-shoot of curator dream destination Art Basel,
for a project exploring the complex relationship between fashion and
design. Everyone involved ended up enjoying it so much that it became
an annual event, and past successful ventures have included a
performance by American indie kids OK Go, where the band played on
Fendi fur-covered Gibson guitars, and last year’s ‘Craft Punk’, where
ten new designers created original pieces from Fendi off-cuts.
This years offering was ‘Design Vertigo’, a four part installation
which took place last week at celebrated Milan furniture fair ‘Salon
del Mobile.
The project saw four artists, sculptor Graham Hudson, Berlin-based
studio Beta Tank, Switzerland’s Felice Varini and London collective
rAndom International each put their own spin on the exploration of the
intersection between modern design and luxury fashion.
Hudson notably took his inspiration from theatre balconies, and the
concept of communication, trawling through Fendi’s impressive archive
to dress his scaffolding set with vintage furs and bags, as well as
artfully strewn mannequins, encapsulating the purpose of the
collaboration, which is, as Design Miami founder Ambra Medda explains
‘to tackle the theme of design production today and the cross
pollination between different fields like fashion, art, and design.’
